They say the customer is always right, and for the most part that’s true. In cosmetic surgery, Dr. Broadway’s practice has always embraced the fact that the patient’s wishes are above the wishes of the doctor. And it’s that last part that can cause the occasional problem. Occasionally, a patient will request a procedure that Dr. Broadway may think will have an unnatural looking result. Breast augmentation is a perfect example. We’ve all seen the celebrity photos; women with breasts that are out of proportion with their bodies. The results look both unnatural and unappealing; it’s a complete reversal of the goal of cosmetic surgery.

With Spring 2011 in the near distance, Dr. Broadway’s telephones are ringing non stop with questions from patients regarding their breast augmentation procedure. Below is a list of the top ten questions we receive in reference to breast augmentation surgeries, the most popular plastic surgery procedure Dr. Broadway performs before the summer begins.
1. What types of implants does Dr. Broadway offer?
Dr. Broadway offers his breast augmentation patients both saline and MemoryGel breast implants. During your consultation you will be given the opportunity to see and feel both implants, and ask questions to Dr. Broadway and his staff as to which implant is best for you.
2. Will I be healed before summer?
Typically patients will return to most normal activities within a week after surgery, and may begin physical activity two weeks after surgery. If you schedule your surgery in the Spring, you will most likely be all ready for swimsuit season.
3. How do I pick the size of my breast implant?
During your consultation Dr. Broadway will perform a number of breast measurements to help guide you and allow you to understand what your current breast shape can accommodate. You will then try the implants on in a bra, and visually get to see what it will look like on the3D Vectra, a before and after computer simulation of your breast.

4. Where will my breast augmentation surgery be performed?
Your surgery will be performed at Renewal Surgery Center. This is a state licensed, ambulatory surgery center that is completely dedicated to cosmetic surgery. It is owned and operated by Dr. Broadway and his partner, Dr. Millard, and was designed to offer patients a first class surgical experience, with a hand picked staff trained in plastic surgery procedures.
5. Do I have to have breast augmentation surgery under General sedation?
Absolutely not! Dr. Broadway performs most all of his breast augmentations under IV sedation. This means you are asleep during surgery, but you are breathing on your own. The recovery is easier and most patients go home within 60-90 minutes after surgery. You also have the option of a LOCAL breast augmentation, where you are numbed in the breast area, but having a conversation with Dr. Broadway through most all of the surgery.
6. What is the cost for a breast augmentation surgery?
If you choose to have saline breast implants the price of the surgery will be approximatley $7000. If you choose the MemoryGel breast implants, the price of your surgery will be approximately $8200. This includes the OR, anesthesia, breast implants, Dr. Broadway’s fees, blood work, and all of your before and after check-ups. Please note that your prescription medication is not included in this fee.
7. When does Dr. Broadway perform surgery?
Dr. Broadway performs surgery every Monday and Wednesday. He also has surgery availability on some Tuesday afternoons. Currently Dr. Broadway is scheduling into late March and the beginning of April for surgery.
8. Do you charge a consultation fee?
Breast augmentation patients have two options: If they would like to see Dr. Broadway it is $125 for the 90 minute consultation and this does get applied toward your surgery. If you would prefer to meet with Dr. Broadway’s patient coordinator, this is a one hour complimentary consultation where many questions are answered, and where you can try on the implants and utilize the 3D Vectra. You are required to come back for a second shorter consultation with Dr. Broadway so that he can perform breast measurements, but this does eliminate the consultation fee.
9. How do I avoid going to big when picking my breast implants?
Dr. Broadway is recognized throughout the state of Colorado as a plastic surgeon who offers his patients very natural results. You will ultimately select the implant profile and size, but we will guide you, and offer you our expertise so that you make the right breast implant choice for you!

A very common question Dr. Broadway receives during his breast augmentation consultations is “do I have to go under General anesthesia?” Some patients are confused about the different types of anesthesia available, and that they actually have the choice of what type of anesthesia they prefer during their breast augmentation surgery.
The majority of Dr. Broadway’s Denver breast augmentation patients elect to have their surgery with LOCAL and IV sedation. The LOCAL anesthesia will numb the breast area, while the IV sedation will allow you to fall into a light sleep, but you are constantly breathing on your own without the use of a ventilator. Dr. Broadway’s patients wake up in little discomfort, and generally feel ready to go home within about an hour after their surgery.
A few of our patients have even elected to have their surgery performed under LOCAL only, meaning Dr. Broadway numbed the breast area, but the patient was awake and having a conversation with Dr. Broadway through the entire 1 1/2 hour procedure. This is an option that all of out patients can choose if they feel they can tolerate mild discomfort.
General sedation is the third option that our patients have, but typically is not needed for breast augmentation procedures. Once patients realize the anesthesia method does not have to be General sedation, they typically feel very relieved and are surprised at how the overall recovery is easier than predicted.

Breast Augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the United States. Plastic surgeons across the nation implant thousands of saline and MemoryGel breast implants every year. Although breast augmentation surgery has become one of the easier procedures in terms of types of anesthesia it can be offered with, as well as recovery and technological advances of material, it still has risks that patients need to understand and be aware of.
One of the biggest risks associated with breast augmentation is a post procedural development called capsular contracture. This condition is an abnormal response from the immune system to a foreign object. Scar tissue forms around all implanted material as a natural healing process, and scar tissue around an implant is not an issue as long as the scar tissue does not tighten. The exact cause of capsular contracture is not known, however some factors that are believed to lead to the condition are bacterial contamination, silicone implant leakage or rupture, and hematoma.
There are four grades of capsular contracture which are refered to as Baker Grades:
Baker Grade 1: The breasts are soft and have a nice round shape.
Baker Grade2: The breasts feel slightly firm and the edge of the implant can be seen slightly through the skin.
Baker Grade 3: The breasts are firm and the implant can be seen or felt through the skin. The breasts may appear unnaturally round.
Baker Grade 4: The breasts are hard, distorted, and often painful.
“Early” capsular contracture typically occurs within the first year after surgery and can be caused by a bacterial infection inside the pocket where the implant resides. Typically with other types of infections, patients will experience redness, swelling and fever. Often times when there is an infection with an implant, whether it’s breast or another type of prosthetic, the bacteria remains dormant around the implant until it is provokes the surrounding scar tissue to tighten and contract.
“Late” capsular contracture typically occurs years after a patient has had their original surgery, and can be caused by the scar tissue around the implant becoming inflamed and irritated, often times in response to silicone gel having leaked through the shell. Late capsular contracture cases do not occur as often with saline breast implants, however if after a deflation a patient does not remove the implant, scar tissue can build up within the pocket eventually causing the breast to become tight, firm and eventually painful.
Breast augmentation in Denver is the number one procedure that Dr. David Broadway performs on his Colorado plastic surgery patients. He performs hundreds of breast augmentation procedures per year, and since he began offering breast enhancement surgeries close to 20 years ago, he has had less than 10 primary patients develope capsular contracture. Numerous studies have been published with capsular contracture rates varying between 10-50%, so the rate of our patients developing the post operative complication is far less than the national average.
There are many theories out there on to prevent capsular contracture. None have show true evidence that if you follow the rules, you won’t develop the issue, but we believe there are steps you can take to at least try to prevent it from happening. There are four major components that Dr. Broadway follows, and believes are the reasons he has so few patients who develop capsular contracture. First, Dr. Broadway recommends patients place the breast implant below the muscle vs. above the muscle. Subpectoral placement allows the muscle to contract the implant and help to keep the pocket a little bigger than the implant, so it is more difficult for the scar band to form and tighten around the implant.
Second, Dr. Broadway prefers to use smooth implants vs. textured. This is a conflicting issue, and one in which the physician decides based on their experience, and personal judgement. During surgery, your smooth round implant will be washed in an anti bacterial solution, and will only touch the sterile hands of Dr. Broadway, helping to eliminate contamination. Patients also have the option of using the Keller Funnel during surgery.
Third, we teach all patients the importance of daily massage. Again, this theory comes along with keeping the pocket a little bigger than the implant so the scar tissue does not adhere to the implant. It’s a simple technique that is taught to every breast augmentation patient typically one week after surgery.
Finally, Dr. Broadway utilizes drains after all breast augmentation surgeries. This again will be a personal philosophy by each surgeon. Dr. Broadway believes the drains will help to eliminate excess fluid or blood that might remain in the pocket after surgery. These drains are kept in for a minimum of 48 hours.
When researching your Denver breast augmentation procedure, make sure you understand all the risks that can come along with the surgery. Make sure you ask your board certified surgeon what they do to prevent capsular contracture, and how many cases they have experienced in their career. We never want to scare a patient with risks associated with having breast implants, but when making this big decision, it’s important that you understand all aspects of the surgery.
